How We Name Our Fragrances

A lot of people ask us why we name our fragrances the way we do. Why numbers? Why the ampersands? Why two separate words when the fragrance is one complete thing? The answer is longer than a simple naming convention. It's actually about how we think about fragrance itself.

When we started Jam & Bottle, we spent a lot of time thinking about what each fragrance was trying to do. And we realized something: every fragrance is a conversation between two ideas. Every beautiful scent is a balance. An argument, even. Two things that shouldn't work together but somehow do.

The Power of the Ampersand

The ampersand is what tied it all together for us. That single character... it's a connector. It's not a plus sign, which would suggest addition. It's not a comma, which would suggest a list. An ampersand says these two things are in dialogue with each other. They're equals. They're partners.

No.1 Powder & Petal isn't powder plus a petal. It's the conversation between soft, sweet powder and the delicacy of fresh flowers. The fragrance lives in that space between them. It's both at once, and neither completely.

No.2 Spun & Golden isn't just spinning or just golden. It's the moment when something catches light while it's turning. Movement and radiance in conversation. That's where the fragrance actually lives.

No.3 Ember & Velvet is the contrast between something hot and fierce and something soft and sensual. The whole composition is built on that tension, that balance.

Once we understood that, the ampersand wasn't just a design choice. It was the truth of how the fragrances worked.

Why Numbers Matter

The numbers came from a different place. We wanted something that felt timeless and classic without being pretentious. Luxury fragrances often have these elaborate names. Layers of meaning. References to obscure flowers or distant places. Sometimes they're beautiful. Sometimes they feel like they're trying too hard.

Numbers felt honest to us. They're simple. They're ordinal. They suggest a story unfolding in sequence. Not a hierarchy, but a narrative. No.1 is the beginning. Where people meet us. Then they might discover No.2. And then No.3. Each one adds to the story rather than replacing the previous one.

There's also something timeless about a number. Naming our fragrances "Powder & Petal" instead of "Rose Dream Garden Song" or whatever... it gives them longevity. The poetic part can evolve, but the number is fixed. Permanent. It becomes your anchor.

The Poetic Names Are the Heart

But the numbers alone would be cold, and we didn't want that. So the poetic names became essential. They're how you understand the spirit of the fragrance. What you should expect. How it wants to make you feel.

Powder & Petal tells you: this is soft. Delicate. Subtle. Not bombastic. You're probably wearing this because you want to feel gentle and romantic, not powerful.

Spun & Golden says: this is warm. Radiant. A little bit luxurious. It's for someone who's feeling confident, or wants to feel confident. Someone who's catching the light.

Ember & Velvet whispers: this is mysterious. Deep. Sensual. You're wearing this because you contain multitudes. Because you're comfortable with being complicated. Because you want people to lean in and discover more about you.

The poetry tells the story. The number is the anchor. Together, they give you a complete sense of what you're getting.

Why Not Just Call Them by Their Primary Notes?

We could have named them "Rose & Powder" or "Vanilla & Amber" based on their primary notes. That would have been descriptive. And honestly? That's how a lot of indie brands do it. They list ingredients like the fragrance is a recipe you're buying rather than an experience you're stepping into.

But fragrance isn't about the notes. Or rather... the notes are just the vocabulary. What matters is what the notes do together. How they behave. What they make you feel.

If we called No.1 by its primary notes, it would lose some of its mystery. You'd think you knew what it was before you ever smelled it. The naming we chose... it hints at what's inside without spoiling the discovery. You smell it and you think "oh, that's what Powder & Petal actually means." And that moment of understanding is part of the pleasure.

Looking Forward

We've been asked if we'll ever go beyond three fragrances. And honestly, we're not sure yet. If we do, we'll continue with the same naming philosophy. No.4, No.5, whatever comes next. And they'll have their own ampersand pairs. Their own conversations between two states of being.

Because that's what Jam & Bottle fragrances are, ultimately. They're not just perfumes. They're pauses. Moments where two opposing things come into balance and create something new. We give them names that honor that complexity.

So when you wear Powder & Petal, you're not just wearing a fragrance. You're wearing the conversation itself. You're embodying that balance. And that, we think, is worth naming.
